1. How are the headlines updated?

As of June, 2006, NYKFP uses an automatic headline retrieval system with a script that retrieves headline information from each local paper's respective sites. This script runs every half hour from midnight to the morning hours daily to ensure that we grab the latest headlines as soon as they go live on their respective sites, to ensure that the headlines section will be a reliable source of all your daily Knicks news.

The following newspapers are currently supported by the script: New York Daily News, New York Post, The New York Times, Newsday, The Record, The Journal News. The only local paper not currently supported is The Star-Ledger, due to technical difficulties with their website, we are hopeful that we will be able to support that site in the near future also.

2. How do I change my display preference on the headlines page?

You can customize how you want the headline pages to look by choosing whether or not to display the description paragraph for each headline. Some users may want to just look at all of the week's headlines at a glance, others may want to read each headline's full description. You can choose to show the description for today's headlines only (default), show description for all headlines, or show none. You can choose your preference at the top of the page, and this preference will be saved in a cookie so that you won't have to select it again the next time you visit.

3. Why are some older headline links broken?

We only keep the title and teaser of all Knick-related articles at NYKFP. As for the full article itself, we link you to the original source where we got it from. However, most of the media sources online expire their articles after a certain amount of time. Most require you to pay a small fee to read an article after a certain time has passed since its publication date.

4. For how long does each newspaper make their articles readable?

New York Daily News - Articles don't expire. However articles before July 16, 2002 used a different system of URLs and are therefore inaccessible.
New York Post - Articles expire after 1 month.
The New York Times - Articles are no longer free after 7 days. Note: Free subscription is required for reading articles within the last 7 days.
The Star-Ledger - Articles expire after 1 month.
Newsday - Articles expire slightly after 1 month.
The Record - Articles don't expire. However articles before July 1, 2003 used a different system of URLs and are therefore inaccessible.
The Journal News - Articles don't expire.

5. Why can't you archive full-length articles?

Not only would it take tremendous storage space to archive all Knick-related articles at full-length, we would likely get into legal trouble because we are depriving newspapers the potential revenue they would get from people purchasing their articles.

6. How can I read expired articles for free?

There are some archiving resources on the web that will keep copies of old web pages. Google is a popular one. Type in "site:nypost.com knicks" would pull up pages related to the Knicks from the site nypost.com. Clicking on "cached" under the search results would bring you the archived article stored on google. Another online archive is the Internet Archive which archives entire websites at certain dates.

Using these two resources cannot guarentee that you will find the article that you're looking for. If you really want to read a specific article and do not wish to pay, you can always go to your local library, where microfilms of old newspapers are usually provided for free.
