Knicks Shot Dead by Mavericks

By Brandon Everett

December 21, 2004

I get tired of these prescription drug commercials, constantly some new pill for something not discussed in the ad. I noticed something admirable about them though. Every commercial opens with the vague, yet enticing greeting. “Ask your doctor about the benefits of Lipimax.” It doesn’t tell you what those benefits are, but it leaves no mystery about what side effects, drawbacks and reactions you might have to it. I like honesty.

Knicks get routed at home.

They hedge the “benefits” and the negatives and I must say, they are pretty straight forward. You basically know what your getting yourself into when you pop this potentially positive pill. I think for the health of the fans, a strategy like this would be vital, if implemented by the Knicks Game Night staff.

Moochie Norris could deliver a brief recorded message right before tip-off. “New York Knicks, All Ball, the Knickerbockers may not be for everyone though, see your doctor, side effects could include headaches, vomiting, and discomfort.” I need someone to blame, so I’m blaming the Knick advertising department for not fully disclosing to me what I was about to encounter tonight.

Defense, ooooh deeeeeefense, where did you gooooooo? I watched one half of basketball tonight, after 24 minutes I had reached my threshold for pain. I did what I have never done, I stopped watching. I realize it’s my responsibility to give a fair recap of what happened, but the clear plain truth is, in this game, nothing past the 24 minute mark mattered.

Air-ball, brick, air-ball, brick, brick, brick to open the game, that’s 0 for the first 6. I guess I can't complain, I did get my warning for what would lie ahead. It was less then 4 minutes and New York was taking their first time out and down 10 points.

Dirk Nowitzki’s altitude was too much for New York, he came out guns just blazing, shooting easily over the 6-9 Kurt Thomas. The entire Maverick team was playing like they had an E-Z Pass in their back pocket, driving in, around, and through the awful Knick defense, every trip down the floor.

The Dallas Mavericks were able to spot themselves a quarters worth of points in just 24 minutes, essentially starting the third quarter ahead 39-0. Here’s how.

Dallas simply showed much more intensity from the opening tip. The Mavericks were dominating New York in rebounding, on both the offensive and defensive ends, converting second chance opportunities, and doing all this while shooting 60%.

Turnovers were also favoring the Mavericks. On the game as a whole, Dallas cashed in for 19 points off Knick mistakes and miscues. Dallas turned the ball over as well, but the Knicks only walked away with 4 points.

Dirk Nowitzki aside, Josh Howard was the x-factor for the Mavericks. In the first meeting between the two teams Howard dominated, and he did so again tonight with 26 points and 16 rebounds, 7 coming on the offensive glass.

This has to be the lowest point of the season, please, let this be the lowest point of any season. As a consolation we finally got to see Bruno, even though it was junk minutes. He added 7 points and 2 steals in 8 minutes, I’ll take that over Vin Baker. Give me something to cheer about. New York travels to Boston on Friday, and sadly that’s all I can bear tonight, all I can manage to write, without feeling like slitting my wrists with a stapler.
